Sunny Island Farm (Pelee Island, ON)
Martha Ndokuo grew up in a farming family in the hills of Cameroon, West Africa. John DeMarco was raised in Essex County with a love of nature, but only got started in farming later in life. Together theyhave been learning how to grow garlic and other vegetables in the warm climate of Pelee Island in Lake Erie, where friendly neighbours have helped by passing on their experience.
Sunny Island Farm is an ecological agro-forest, where natural and planted trees and savannahs occupy most of the land. The garlic is grown in small patches surrounded by trees, in a space that is shared with the wild animals and birds. No inputs are needed, as the soil’s fertility is restored by long fallows. Plastic mulch is also unnecessary as long as you are still willing to pick up a hoe. Since no animal
products are used, the produce is veganic as well as organic.
