Reimer Family Farm (Aylmer, ON)

Our faces light up when talking about Diedrich and Mary Reimer, their family and their farm. They are true partners in our project to reinvigorate our local food system. They grew organic celery for us for the first time and we have high hopes for the paw-paws we planted together in their orchard. Some day!

How did you get your start in farming?

We grew up on a produce farm, and enjoyed it enough to continue after we were married. Both our families did some contract farming, then later we joined forces to include market gardening.

Why is organic important to you?

This was a gradual process for us to change over from using fertilizers and sprays to organic gardening. On the subject of pesticides, recent studies show that it takes the glysophate in “Round-Up” 22 years to break down to half, another 22 years to break the remaining in half and so on. To think they used to say you can drink Round-up without ill effects. Recently, I heard that traces of pesticides have been found in Arctic waters. But, in all this, let’s not lose sight of the fact that God is still in control.

What is the most challenging aspect of organic farming?

Sometimes we think, “Paperwork”! But that is important so customers can have confidence in a certified product. As far as insects and pests, we don’t have any huge difficulties. Blight in cucumbers and tomatoes may be the biggest hurdle, but for us the solution is to raise these crops in hot houses.

What is your favorite vegetable?

Our family agreed that although tomatoes are considered a fruit, that crop is our long-time favorite. Tomatoes have a wide range of uses – in soups, salads, salsa, etc. We’ve been raising heirloom tomatoes for nine seasons and hope to continue.
