The Root Cellar: Organic Cafe and Artisanal Bakery: Celebrating Local Food From Farm to Table
The team at On The Move Organics is excited to announce that we've had two successful months at our newest project, The Root Cellar Organic Cafe and Bakery, located at 623 Dundas Street East. At The Root Cellar, as at On The Move, we believe that food is political, that the choices we make about food--what we choose to eat and who we choose to support by doing so--resonate through our community, our economy, and our planet. At the foundation of this project is a commitment to invigorating our community, discovering the plentitude of our local foodshed, supporting sustainable agriculture, and working cooperatively.
At The Root Cellar, our menu is seasonal, organic and local. Everything is made from scratch in house, and we offer full transparency on where our food comes from. We embrace the tenets of the slow food movement while consciously striving to offer affordable and accessible options to our community.
At The Root Cellar, we serve fresh-baked artisan breads and pastries using local organic flour from Arva Grain Mill in Arva, ON. Our baker, Max, is a whiz at using ancient grains and low-gluten flours in both his breads and pastries. We also offer healthy organic and local meal items for lunch and dinner, and big delicious brunches on Saturday mornings. In keeping with our commitment to sustainable and ethical products, we are also happy to offer locally-roasted fair trade and organic certified coffee from the Cafe Justicia cooperative in Guatemala, and locally-sourced natural tea from Wildflowers Tea in St. Thomas, ON. And, of course, we have carried our juice bar menu over from the market, and are pleased to announce that you can now get a Sikorski Slammer five days a week!
Lastly, with The Root Cellar we strive to offer a space for community involvement, creativity and education. We are working on putting together a knowledge bartering collective, a book club, and lots of exciting special events, so stay tuned as we update the website with news!
