REACT!: Time to Take Action on Climate Change
Part of rebuilding a sustainable and resilient food system is creating systems for distribution that are less reliant on fossil fuels. Since the inaugural ride of our delivery cargo bike in 2009, we’ve been working hard to demonstrate the feasibility of human powered transport. In 2012 we expanded our bicycle delivery area to include Old South with the addition of a bicycle cargo trailer. The two pedal powered vehicles now deliver more than 40% of our hefty boxes in season. Throughout this experience, however, we’ve discovered a series of limits to the practicality of pure pedal power: weight, weather, rider and distance. To expand our sustainable delivery zone and break through these limits, we are very excited to be introducing our newest fossil fuel free delivery vehicle, the REACT! (Renewable Electric Assist Cargo Tricycle). We’re working with the same brilliant local designer, Jensen Didulo, who put together the cargo bike. When completed, the REACT will be capable of hauling some serious weight on its sturdy steel frame and reach out to a greater delivery radius through the addition of a solar powered electric assist option. A full enclosure will protect our incredible delivery riders from the elements and we’re hoping to practice our own version of season extension! Bring on 60%!
