Tomatoes, Heirloom (Aylmer) - 1lb
From the giant multi-pound German whites, to the deceptively green zebras, to the pint size purple Cherokees, heirlooms are gnarly creatures. In their wondrous variety, heirloom tomatoes steadfastly refuse to grow in uniform shapes, sizes or colours. To top it off, many varieties have delicate skin and are prone to cracking, leaving a brown scab during growth or a bruised tomato during transport. For their resistance to transportation and failure to conform to uniformity, heirlooms have been rejected by industrial agriculture. Fortunately for us, small scale farms and backyard gardeners have preserved this fount of genetic diversity. The real wonder of an heirloom is on the inside. Try a slice, and you will understand.
